MANAGING INVASIONS FOR GRASSLAND RESTORATION AND RESILIENCE

2-DAY WORKSHOP

ORGANISED BY: DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY, UNIVERSITY OF KASHMIR, Hazratbal, Srinagar

Collaboration with: Himalayan Pastoral Trust

In the Anthropocene, one-third to one-half of the Earth’s land surface, and natural ecosystems thereon, have been transformed by human action. Growing biological invasions are a major outcome of such transformation, which has eventually become a direct driver of species extinctions, locally and globally. The rising ecological and economic costs of biological invasions warrant effective monitoring and management of invasive species in natural ecosystems. It is imperative to restore the degraded ecosystems to combat the challenges posed by invasive species, exacerbated by climate change and other anthropogenic pressures. The Kashmir Himalayan grassland ecosystems have been largely understudied from this perspective despite comprising a major part of the terrestrial land area and offering varied ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, forage production and climate regulation, besides providing a range of other economic, cultural and recreational benefits. The present workshop has been designed to deliberate upon the following thematic areas.
